OurSQL Episode 89: Seal of Approval

This week we talk about MariaDB - explaining features, and comparing to Percona's patched MySQL and Oracle's MySQL. MariaDB is touted as "a better MySQL, not a different MySQL". MariaDB is the 2nd most popular open source database, even more popular than Postgres.

MariaDB

Distributions which include MariaDB - note that RedHat should be on the list, we've reported the bug already that it's not on the list, but rest assured, RedHat includes MariaDB.

Ear Candy
This week's ear candy is about MySQL init scripts. In one of the comments in Baron's blog, Harmut Holzgrafe post that there is a mysql.server script included w/ the MySQL package. It's location will be slightly different depending on the version and linux distribution. It's much better behaved than the ones included by default. We recommend you to review and use this one in production servers to avoid the headaches that a bad init script can cause.

At the Movies
This week in at the movies, we present a session from this year's MySQL Conference & Expo called "The Right Read Optimization is Actually Write Optimization", by Leif Walsh of Tokutek.
