Interview with Ori Herrnstadt, CTO of Akiban
Akiban is a full-stack software solution that acts as a MySQL slave to execute your worst read queries. It optimizes queries with multiple table joins to be fewer (and in many cases, no) joins, using their table-grouping concept.
If your MySQL queries are running slowly (taking several seconds or even minutes) or if you could benefit from simplifying complex joins transparently, apply for Akiban's design partner program
Backups are recommended via snapshot, there are no special tools to backup Akiban.
Monitoring is the same as using MySQL, just use the regular MySQL templates you use with Cacti/Nagios/whatever.
At the Movies
This week in at the movies we present Managing Databases in a DevOps Environment by Robert Treat of Omni TI at Postgres Open, in September 2011.
There's a lot of talk in the devops world about bringing developer concepts to system administration, and discussion the other way about bringing the awareness of operations to developers, but a lot of the conversation leaves out what is often the most critical part of your technology stack: the database. Robert talks about how you need a plan that both developers and operations people can understand and embrace, that includes monitoring and visibility, managing schema changes and production pushes, optimization, configuration and backups, specifically as applied to databases.
