OurSQL Episode 116: Do You Make the Grade (part 5)?

This week, we finish our series on the Operations Report Card as it applies to database administrators. In Ear Candy, we discuss one problem with setting table_open_cache higher than needed., and At the Movies is Tools and Techniques of Index Design by Bill Karwin.

News
MariaDB 10.0.0 alpha is out, including the SHOW EXPLAIN FOR thread_id feature for running an EXPLAIN on a running query, and multi-source replication.

common_schema 1.2 has also come out - common_schema is a framework for MySQL server administration and diagnostics. It introduces SQL based tools which simplify otherwise complex shell and client scripts, allowing the DBA to be independent of operating system, installed packages and dependencies. It is a self contained schema, compatible with all MySQL >= 5.1 servers. Installed by importing the schema into the server, there is no need to configure nor compile. No special plugins are required, and no changes to your configuration.
