OurSQL Episode 102: Virtualization 102

This week, we continue the virtualization talk about what to know when doing virtualization. We also talk about using KVM & virtualbox.
Episode 101, part 1 of virtualization.

FrOSCon will be held Saturday and Sunday, August 25th - 26th at the University of Applied Sciences Bonn-Rhein-Sieg in Germany. Registration is a small fee for personal attendees, only 5 euros. It is more for corporate attendees. There will be a MySQL and friends room this year, as in years past.

MySQL Connect will be held in San Francisco on Saturday September 29th and Sunday September 30th. This is a technical conference about MySQL, bringing together MySQL engineers at Oracle and the MySQL Community, and will include sessions about the latest MySQL features and roadmaps. The schedule is now online.

Percona Live: New York City 2012 will be held from Monday, Oct 1st through Tuesday Oct 2nd.

Virtualization tools
KVM - kernel based virtual machine - also on ubuntu
VMware (not going into detail about VMware)
Xen (not going into detail about Xen)

We talk about considering CPU, RAM, network, storage and I/O.

VirtualBox's networking overview
Bridged networking
Internal networking
host-only networking

running multiple instances of MySQL without virtualization
mysqld_multi, a native way to run multiple MySQL instances without hardware virtualization.

Linux Containers - used by OpenShift, which we talked about in episode 87

shared folders in VirtualBox

To create a virtual machine, the most common procedure for an end user is:

* Download an ISO file (a CD/DVD image) of the intended distribution.
* Define in a GUI the parameters of the VM (as discussed above)
* Mount / specify the ISO on the guest’s CD drive
* Run the VM
- remember to click inside the virtual display area to direct the mouse & kbd to the virtual machine.
- Each VM software has a ‘dead key’ combination to release the control of the keyboard and mouse back to the host (ie: left ctrl+left shit, left ctrl, etc.)
* Complete the installation as required by the corresponding ISO image
* Umount the CD image
* Reboot the guest
* Install any desired packages.

Ear Candy
This week's ear candy is about the impact of memory allocators on MySQL performance

At the Movies
This week in at the movies, we present Percona's Nickolay Ihalainen talking about Detecting MySQL IO problems on Linux at different abstraction layers.

Where You Can See Us
Sheeri will be at the Northeast PHP Conference Sat Aug 11 through Sun August 12th, talking about "Getting the Most out of Your Indexes" and "Events in MySQL"

Sheeri will not be at the August Boston MySQL User Group on Monday, August 13th, at the Microsoft NERD Center, where Dave Stokes of the MySQL Community Team (at Oracle) will talk about MySQL 5.6. MySQL 5.6 has many improvements and new features that you may not know about that you will want to exploit.

Gerry will be at the September Seattle MySQL Meetup on Monday Sep 03 at 7:00 PM, location to be determined.

Sheeri will be at the September Boston MySQL User Group meeting on Monday September 10th at 7 pm, where Max Mether of SkySQL will talk about "MariaDB - a MySQL replacement?"

Sheeri will speak about monitoring MySQL at NagiosWorld, September 25-28th in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Sheeri will speak about Database Scaling at Mozilla and Google-Hacking MySQL at MySQL Connect, Saturday Sept 29th and Sunday September 30th. Gerry will also be there with Tokutek.
