Time Zones in MySQL (Sheeri K. Cabral)
video
PDF presentation
Description:
MySQL data types do not support the SQL standard WITH TIME ZONE attribute. How do you store times in MySQL to efficiently show your customers times in their own time zone?

The TIMESTAMP data type will show different times if you change the server's time zone.

This presentation covers all this and more, including all the nuances of using offsets (such as "-8:00" to represent Pacific Standard Time as UTC -8 hours) and how to use named time zones (such as "US/Eastern"). This presentation is a must for anyone who wants to learn the most optimized way to convert a time based on time zone.

How InnoDB works: Exploring SHOW ENGINE INNODB STATUS (Sheeri K. Cabral)
video
PDF presentation
Description:
Sheeri K. Cabral of the Pythian Group (http://www.pythian.com) presents on how to get a consistent snapshot to build a slave, how to use mk-table-checksum to check for differences between masters and slaves on an ongoing basis, and how to use tools such as mk-table-sync and mysqldump to sync the data if there are any discrepancies.

Building a MySQL Slave and Keeping it in Sync (Sheeri K. Cabral)
video
PDF presentation
Description:
This presentation was be done by Sheeri Cabral of The Pythian Group and went into how to use SHOW ENGINE INNODB STATUS to get more information about your Innodb tables, foreign keys and transactions. This is a great presentation to learn how InnoDB works.

It also went through how to use SHOW ENGINE INNODB STATUS to tune several InnoDB variables:

innodb_adaptive_hash_index
innodb_commit_concurrency
innodb_concurrency_tickets
innodb_file_io_threads
innodb_log_buffer_size
innodb_max_purge_lag
innodb_sync_spin_loops
innodb_thread_concurrency
innodb_thread_sleep_delay

The ScaleDB shared-disk clustering Storage Engine for MySQL (Mike Hogan)
video
Slideshare presentation
Description:
Mike Hogan, CEO of ScaleDB spoke at the Boston MySQL User Group in September 2009:

ScaleDB is a storage engine for MySQL that delivers shared-disk clustering. It has been described as the Oracle RAC of MySQL. Using ScaleDB, you can scale your cluster by simply adding nodes, without partitioning your data. Each node has full read/write capability, eliminating the need for slaves, while delivering cluster-level load balancing. ScaleDB is looking for additional beta testers, sign up at http://www.scaledb.com

Drizzle, Gearman and Narada (Eric Day and Patrick Galbraith)
video, part 1 (Drizzle)
video, part 2 (Gearman and Narada)
PDF presentation
Description
Eric Day and Patrick Galbraith spoke on Drizzle, Gearman and Narada at the July 2009 Boston MySQL User Group. Part 1 is about an hour long and is about Drizzle - "We will explain what the Drizzle project is, what we aim to accomplish, and an overview of where we are at."

Part 2 is about an hour and a half long and is about Gearman and Narada, a custom search application:

"We will also be introducing the fundamentals of how to leverage Gearman, an open-source, distributed job queuing system. Gearman's generic design allows it to be used as a building block for almost any use - from speeding up your website to building your own Map/Reduce cluster. We will tie Drizzle and Gearman together and demonstrate how they work in a custom Search Engine application."

MySQL Real Time Data Warehousing - Optimizing Concurrent Storage and Retrieval Operations for Real-Time Surveillance Applications (Jacob Nikom)
video
PDF presentation
Description:
At the March 2009 Boston MySQL User Group meeting, Jacob Nikom of MITs Lincoln Laboratory presented Optimizing Concurrent Storage and Retrieval Operations for Real-Time Surveillance Applications. In the middle of the talk, Jacob said he sometimes calls what he did in this application as real-time data warehousing, which was so accurate I decided to give that title to this blog post.

This talk discussed how to do real-time retrieval operations while doing concurrent high volume insertion, including: * How to keep up with 1.5 Mb/second per server incoming data stream * * server hardware comparison between a multi-core AMD Opteron and a multi core Intel Xeon * MySQL/Postgres comparison * schema design * design of the storage/retrieval benchmark * tuning MySQL

Jacob showed the insertion time from the number of applied indexes. He also demonstrated the excellent responsiveness of the MySQL server both in simulated and actual surveillance.

Feb 2009 - Duleepa "Dups" Wijayawardhana presents Events in MySQL 5.1: The whys and whenfores. No video/slides available.

Partitioning in MySQL 5.1 (Sheeri K. Cabral)
video
PDF Presentation
Description:
Sheeri K. Cabral goes through how to define partitions, how partitioning makes queries faster, the different types of partitioning and when to use each type, and the restrictions and limitations of partitioning.
